Cundall & Duffy
& Duffy

Meet the Team

We’re proud to have a fantastic team of vets, veterinary nurses and support staff - made up of friendly, compassionate and dedicated professionals who really love animals.
Veterinary Surgeons
Chris Cundall BA VetMB MRCVS (Partner)
Chris Cundall graduated from Cambridge University in 1978 and following a short spell in a practice in Hull came to work in 1983 for the practice that was to become Cundall and Duffy.
Chris is from a well-known local Sherburn family and still lives in the area with his wife Jill. His main clinical interests include equine and farm work. Outside work he is heavily involved with point-to-pointing and still rides his own pointers. His twice-yearly visits to the Cheltenham Festival are set in stone and no-one at the practice can ever remember him missing one!
John Duffy BVSc MRCVS (Partner)
John Duffy graduated with honours from Liverpool University in 1978 and worked in Derbyshire, Lincolnshire and Berkshire before finally settling in Yorkshire in 1985. John enjoys all aspects of mixed practice, though most of his time is now spent at the surgery.
John believes that our practice needs to have the flexibility to allow each Veterinary Surgeon to follow up their own caseload to allow the best possible continuation of patient care. He’s a big proponent of sharing knowledge and expertise between the team. Outside of work, John keeps a small flock of pedigree Texel sheep at home.
Jane Duffy BVSc MRCVS (Partner)
Jane Duffy was brought up and educated in North Yorkshire, before graduating from Liverpool University with honours in 1979. Having worked in farm and equine practice for several years, she decided to concentrate on companion animal medicine and surgery. Jane is particularly interested in medical cases, dermatology and ophthalmology and all types of surgery, and regularly attends courses to further her knowledge in these fields.
In her spare time, Jane breeds Labradors, and has a real interest in inherited health problems in pedigree dogs, and how these can be avoided. Also Jane enjoys breeding and training gundogs, and working on her small farm.
Hayley Bird Bsc, BVSC, GP Cert SAS, MRCVS DVM MRCVS - Veterinary Assistant
Hayley graduated from the University of Liverpool in 2007 after completing her degree in Pharmacology and Veterinary Science. After working at Cundall and Duffy for her first 6 years in practice Hayley moved to Clevedale Vets where she completed her certificate in Small Animal Surgery.
Hayley returned to Cundall and Duffy in June this year where she hopes to further her interest in small animal orthopaedics.
Hayley also enjoys breeding and showing her flock of Herdwick sheep alongside her partner Tom and with the help of their sheepdog Nell.
Harvey Tate BVSC MRCVS-
Veterinary Assistant
Harvey graduated July 2017 from the University of Liverpool and is originally from North Leeds. He grew up in a home filled with all manner of small animals including ferrets and canaries and witnessed the family dogs having several litters. In addition to this he spent many weekends at work with his father shoeing horses.
Harvey enjoys all aspects of mixed work, in particular exotics and large animal work, with a special interest in goats, camelids and farm animal preventative medicine.
In his spare time Harvey enjoys martial arts, hockey and skiing and he is a fantastic baker to the delight of everyone at the practice.
Phillip van der Riet BVSc MRCVS
Having graduated in 1995, Phillip worked in mixed veterinary practice in South Africa and the Middle East for 8 years, and in the East Yorkshire area for 14 years, before moving to the Scarborough area in 2017.
Phillip enjoys the veterinary care of all species we work with and has intensive experience in small animal and equine work, and general experience in farm animal work. As a general practitioner, Phillip aims to be able to help in your care of any of your animal companions and dependents. Outside of work, Phillip is keen on enjoying the splendours of the Yorkshire coastal areas.
Veterinary Nurses
Nichola Pither RVN Cert Ed D32/33 MBVNA
Head Veterinary Nurse
Head Veterinary Nurse Nichola has been with us since 1997, joining the practice after completing her National Diploma in Animal Management and my NVQ Level 2 in Animal Care at Bishop Burton College. Whilst working at the practice, she continued her training, becoming a Qualified Veterinary Nurse in 2000. Nichola left the practice to become a lecturer in Animal Management and Veterinary Nursing in 2003. After teaching for 5 years, she missed veterinary nursing and returned to the practice as Head Veterinary Nurse. Today, Nichola provides advice to our clients on a wide range of topics – she is a pet insurance advisor, Hills Weight Consultant and runs our Puppy Parties. In her spare time, Nichola enjoys spending time with her husband, young son and daughter, cat Arthur and various fish - which keeps her very busy!
Sarah Barraclough - Nurse
Sarah joined Cundall & Duffy in 2003 after studying Animal Care at Bishop Burton College. Since then, she’s gone on to become a trained Pet Insurance Advisor, and following a year at Hull University, she has obtained a European Computer Driving License. Sarah is currently training to become a Veterinary Healthcare Advisor.
Sarah loves all kinds of animals – she has 6 cats, 2 dogs, 2 snakes and some fish at home. Most of her animals have been rehomed from the practice.
Fiona Areekun – Nurse
Fiona came to the practice in 2002, after completing a Higher National Diploma in Zoology, Herpetology and Behavioural sciences course at Bishop Burton College. Fiona then completed her nurse training at the practice, which she loves.
When not caring for her animals at home (which include dogs, cats, ferrets and guinea pigs), Fiona loves to travel. Her husband and children love meeting the orphaned animals she brings home, and are really tolerant of the unpredictable hours the job sometimes involves.
Erin Davis – Trainee Veterinary Nurse
Erin joined the practice in 2013, after completing an Extended Diploma in Animal Management at Askham Bryan College. She has always wanted to work with animals, and has recently begun her Veterinary Nurse training.
When not at work, Erin enjoys spending time with her cat, as well as her mum’s 4 dogs (of all different shapes and sizes!) and 4 horses, all of which are rescues.
Nikki Steel- Veterinary Nursing Assistant
Nikki joined the Cundall & Duffy team in September 2014, following a lifelong passion and a real desire to build a career caring for animals. She is currently gaining experience and learning from the team, and wants to start her training to become a Registered Veterinary Nurse.
Nikki is from a local farming family, where she likes to muck in wherever she can. In her free time, she enjoys taking long walks with her two dogs, Gypsy and Barley, and attending fitness classes. She is currently learning how to ski.
Anna Robson - Veterinary Nursing Assistant
Anna came to Cundall & Duffy in 2015, after completing a BSc HONS in Animal Management from Askham Bryan and a BTEC National Award in Animal Rehabilitation from Bishop Burton College. Anna is now looking to gain experience and develop her knowledge by attending as many courses as she can.
Anna has combined her love of animals with a passion for travel, and has volunteered with some spectacular animals in Australia, and completed a conservation internship at a game reserve in South Africa. When not at work, Anna enjoys long walks along the Yorkshire coastline. She has two cats, Monty and Flex, as well as various fish. Anna is hoping to add a dog to the list sometime soon, to accompany her on the long country walks.
Support Staff
Pat Lightley - Practice Secretary
Pat looks after our practice. She joined us in 2002, after working for 18 years as a nurse – in fact, she received confirmation about her appointment just minutes before the World Cup Final!
Pat is a qualified medical secretary with a wealth of qualifications and experience. She has an AMSPAR diploma and European Computer Driving License, and has trained as both a pet insurance advisor and a healthcare advisor. When not at the practice, Pat loves spending time with her grandson, Dylan. She’s also a huge music fan, and loves going to rock and pop gigs, travelling as far as New York to see her favourite artists.
Carley Temple - Practice Receptionist
Having previously worked as a receptionist at a local doctor’s surgery I made the move to join the team at Cundall and Duffy in November 2017. I have experience of dealing with patients and their needs directly. I know how to show compassion and understand patient care. With my experience and the great fondness I have for animals becoming a Veterinary receptionist was an ideal career move for me. I enjoy meeting lots of people and their interesting pets.
At home I have fish and a very noisy cat called Bear (I’m sure everyone at the practice will agree!!) Outside of the practice I enjoy the occasional bike ride and gardening. I have worked in customer facing roles for 18 years and this is by far my ‘dream job’.
